War in Afghanistan hits home Again as Columbia Soldier Dies

Columbia (WIS) – A 22-year-old soldier from Columbia has died while serving in Afghanistan. The family of Abraham Sherrod Wheeler III tells News 10 he was killed Friday.

Abraham Wheeler Jr., the soldier's father, says a chaplain and a sergeant came to his door Friday to bear the bad news. Wheeler says officials told him his son was killed by a roadside bomb.

Wheeler says his son, who he calls “Rod,” was stationed at Fort Drum in New York. He says he just talked to his son Wednesday, and he was looking forward to coming home next month.

Wheeler graduated from Ridge View High School. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
